The main event this evening was the Pluto art show from 4-6pm. The art show was exactly 10 paintings that were sort of weird and cool, and took all of 2 minutes to view. Luckily there were all sorts of other activities going on around the observatory grounds.
First off, the guys immediately spotted the free hot dogs, chips, and Gatorade/water station sponsored by Finlay Toyota in Flagstaff. Zach ate 3 hot dogs!!! (This was after eating 3 burritos at home at 3:15pm after playing tennis for 2 hours with some of his high school friends!)
We then went on a mythology scavenger hunt sponsored by Flagstaff Peppercorn Games where we had to find different mythology personalities roving around the grounds played by local thespians. We had to talk to each of them to collect clues or perform tasks to help Demeter find her daughter, Persephone. We had the pleasure of speaking with Demeter (for whom we had to tell a joke to cheer her up), Helios (for whom we had to sing), Hecate (for whom we had to give facts about Hades and the Underworld), Pluto (for whom we had to listen to his love for Persephone and then deliver a pomegranate seed to her), Persephone (we had to help her write wedding vows), and Hermes (with whom we performed running stretches before he set off to tell the other gods about Persephone and Pluto’s nuptials). Each of the six mythical figures had one special “key to the underworld” that they could give out to one observatory visitor who performed their task exceptionally well. Ashton received TWO of the six keys for the evening. Yay!!!! The first key Ash and I received for our rousing rendition of “You are My Sunshine” followed by “Black Hole Sun” when asked by Helios to sing a song with “sun” in the lyrics. Go us!!!!! Ash received his second key because he was the only game player who actually went back to Demeter to tell her what happened to her daughter and where to find her. Go Ash!!!

We enjoyed early-evening looks at the moon through telescopes on the Giovalle Observation Deck. We also looked at where construction has begun on the new visitor’s center, outdoor planetarium (with heated seats!!) and educational discovery center to be completed by 2024. Can’t wait!!!
