Iceland Day 7: More waterfalls and exploring the Lake Myvatn Area

We ended our day in Akureyri at Krua Siam Thai restaurant. Excellent authentic cuisine! I had fresh fish red curry. Delicious!

Visiting the beautiful Godafoss waterfall! We crossed the footbridge to visit both sides for optimal viewing!

Visiting the Lake Myvatn area. Cool volcanic craters/cones coming right out of the lake.

Sheep!

There were swarms of midge bugs everywhere due to the water! You can’t see them, but they were there! Ash put his hood up to try and avoid them.

If you zoom in you may be able to see the bugs in this photo!
Lava pillars coming right out of the lake. Apparently the only other place in the world to see these types of formations is Japan.

The water everywhere is crystal clear.

Visiting Dimmuborgir- the Dark Fortress- lava pillars coming formations everywhere!!

Visiting the (stinky) Hvrerir geothermal area

Steam vents, boiling mud pots, all sorts of stinky stuff!

Selfoss waterfall

Dettifoss waterfall was out first stop of the day after a two hour drive north. Selfoss is the upper and Dettifoss is lower waterfall in the same canyon system. Such power! And in a very desolate-looking area. Not much vegetation here. Looks like a moonscape for miles as we were driving in.

  1. Really great. Could not visualize the bugs, but they are tedious in swarms…

  3. Amazing. And I’m sure the pictures don’t do it justice.
