MillerTime: Out of the frying pan…

Into the fire. Or in this case, the oven!

We headed down to Phoenix today to again watch Zach play tennis. The team handedly won their match yesterday in Flag against Moon Valley High. Zach won both singles and doubles. Today they took on Cactus Shadows High School. Unfortunately after snow last week, summer has now made an appearance. We have had wonderful sunshine and highs in the upper 60s / low 70s here in Flagstaff. Unfortunately the temps in Phoenix have topped out near 100 degrees! Zach and partner won their doubles match today and looked strong despite the heat. Zach started his singles match fine and was winning, but then started to feel effects of early heat illness- feeling light headed, dizzy, and profuse sweating. He turned very red. Luckily our coach and the athletic trainer from the opposing school acted quickly and got him in the shade, drinking ice water and electrolytes, and covered in ice packs to cool him down. (He had ice packs under both knees and armpits! Makes me shiver just thinking about it!!!!). It was decided that he should discontinue play to ensure his safety. Derek and I loaded him into the car with ice packs and AC on full blast to take him home. His teammates were very worried and supportive and all walked him to the car to see us off. Zach was not happy to forfeit his match, but better safe than sorry when feeling the effects of the extreme heat. He is feeling much better now, but will probably not be playing in his team match tomorrow (and possibly also Thursday) to ensure full recovery. He will meet with the Flagstaff HS athletic trainer tomorrow for evaluation. After napping in the car on the drive home, we knew he was going to be just fine when he asked for food. After stopping for dinner, he was very chatty the rest of the way home! He is currently lounging in his room with a giant glass of water and snuggling with Snickers!
