Kolob Canyon is Open!!!

After our morning at the south main canyon of the park we found out that the rock slide impacting travel at Kolob Canyon was cleared  and they this more remote area of Zion National Park was again open to visitors. We drove over around 11am and we’re just shaded at the beauty of this part of the park. At an altitude of 6200 ft, the red rock formations with the snow and green vegetation were stunning!

We took a short snowy hike to the Timber Creek Overlook. Totally work it! (Side note: snow is much easier for hiking than mud!) 

Apparently on a clear day one can see all the way to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Today was not one of those days. However the views were still spectacular! 









On our way out if the park, we were flagged down by a man from the Netherlands who had either 1) had been gawking and not been paying attention to his driving and ran off the road over the berm and gotten his SUV wheels stuck or 2) deliberately pulled over the berm to gawk/take pictures and had his wheels sink into the soft shoulder next to the berm. Either way, he asked if we could tow him out. We said that we could not safely do that, but could stop at the ranger station at the bottom to send help. We did just that and I got to talk to emergency dispatch. Kinda cool. Anyway, we assume that the tourist got the help that he needed. Moral of the story, pull over in the properly designated pull-outs and stops to gawk/take pictures/ answer phone calls and texts etc. 

Another interesting observation, Utah highways allow for triple truck trailers. We saw tons of these yesterday as we traveled to and from Nevada on the interstate as well as interstate travel to Kolob canyon today. 

We are now back at home. Derek grilled hot dogs. I made more liquid gold. Time to relax before we head back home to Flagstaff tomorrow.
