Supermoon Superday!

Another busy day! 

The highlight was looking through the telescope tonight to view the pink supermoon! Unfortunately the moon does not actually look pink. Any full moon that occurs in April is called a pink moon named for the blossoming of moss pink, a wildflower native to the Eastern US. The gull moon that occurs within a calendar month has a different name based on a cultural reference to things that occur within that given month. 

January: Wolf Moon

February: Snow Moon

March: Worm Moon

April: Pink Moon

May: Flower Moon

June: Strawberry Moon

July: Buck Moon

August: Sturgeon Moon

September: Harvest Moon or Corn Moon

October: Harvest Moon or Hunter’s Moon

November: Beaver Moon

December: Cold Moon

The Supermoon is any full moon that occurs within 10% of its closest distance to the Earth making it look 7% bigger and 15% brighter than a normal full moon. 

Earlier today, Ashton and I enjoyed listening in to the Lowell Observatory livestream about the science of the Supermoon and watching moon STEM demonstrations. Stay tuned on Ashton’s blog for future moon experiments!!!! 

We also turned the telescope around for a crescent view of the planet Venus! 

Yes Zach is barefoot. Brrr!!!!

It was fun viewing. We were sad that we could not visit a Lowell Observatory for big telescope viewing due being closed for the coronavirus. We are glad that we have our own little telescope setup and a family that loves space and science! 

In addition to school and other learning activities, we played a family game of Can’t Stop. Zach won and said he was pleased at his success with gambling. Haha! 

Derek and I also enjoyed an afternoon walk. We dressed as twins. Haha!
