A Night Out in F-Town

Derek and I had a really fun date night last night! We first dropped off the boys at Grandpa Cliff and Grandma Dixie’s house. (They had their own “date” together at Olive Garden for dinner!) Derek and I headed downtown and ate dinner at Criollo Latin Kitchen. (Thank you for the anniversary gift card Dixie and Cliff!!!) We started the meal with a prickly pear margarita for me and a jalapeño margarita for Derek. Both were great! 

We had the queso fundido as an appetizer which had chorizo, carmelized onions, poblano peppers and of Oaxacan cheese. Ooooooh so good! This could have been a meal in itself! 

For out dinner, Derek had the pork belly tacos and I had the al pastor tacos. Both were excellent, and we decided mine was best. And Grandpa Cliff was right; the black beans were outstanding! 



Afterwards, we walked around downtown for a bit and then stopped in at the Firecreek Coffee Company for a chai and a mocha hot beverage “dessert”. Very tasty and the presentation was so pretty! 





At 7:30pm we walked over to the famous Orpheum Theater in Flagstaff to see F-Town Sound perform. Their style is described as Western Funk meets Latin groove. It is made up of 2 lead singers, guitar, saxophone and bari sax, trombone, trumpet, xylophone, piano, and all sorts of percussion. Tim McJay, the director for the Flag Community Band was playing trombone, so lots of us came out to support him. The opening band was not memorable, and gave us a chance to mingle with new friends- saw many from my band and even my book club. Yay! While not always out style of music, F-Town provided a good show and an opportunity to move and dance. So fun! We got home around midnight. So looking forward to a quiet and lazy Sunday! 





In other news, we spent the entire day Saturday before our date with Ashton at the first of three regional chess tournaments to qualify in the state chess tournament in May. To qualify, one must win 3 games (or win three points). Ashton only won two out of five rounds, so he did not yet qualify for state. However, this tournament gave him more experience and he will try against the regional qualifier tournament next month. We are very proud of him. 

Zach also found out that he did not get one of the six varsity spots on the Flagstaff High School tennis team, so will not be attending the first batch against Tempe HS (Flagstaff only has the 6 varsity spots for matches, they do not have JV spots).   Zach  was, of course, disappointed but does not seem discouraged. (We, as his parents, were a bit shocked and think that the coaches are blind! Haha!) Zach will continue to work on his skills with the team (all boys on the team continue to practice together even if they do not have a varsity spot) and will be given opportunities to challenge for the varsity spots for future matches. We are very proud of him and know it is tough competition this year as a freshman.
