Cahokia Mounds, Illinois

After breakfasting at the hotel, we headed to Cahokia Mounds state park. It was really interesting learning about the culture of the Mississippian peoples and this site which is the largest archaeological site north of Mexico.

Monks Mound is the highest point in the park. The chief's dwellings were likely located here. On the top currently offers great views of St. Louis and the surrounding area. There are154 steps to get to the top. Ash counted them!

Nice hiking trails around the park. We roamed for 3.5 miles through woods and prairie.

Woodhenge is the site of the refurbished solar calendar. Way cool!
