Last day in mountain paradise!
We are now spending our last evening here in Ruidoso before embarking on the long drive back to OK. We spent the day in two different climates. We spent the morning again in the valley (Vaya del Sol ) at Malpais (bad country) exploring the Valley of Fires national recreation area. It was neat seeing the ancient black lava flows. After taking the mile-long walk through the flows we piled back into the car and headed to Alamogordo to eat at the New Mexican restaurant originally in the plan before Ashton got sick earlier in the week. It was neat driving from black lava, to red dirt,to white sand again. NM is just so colorful. After lunch we headed back up towards Cloudcroft and deviated further up the mountain range to Sunspot to see the telescopes at the solar observatory and check out the small solar museum there. So cool! After spending a hot 96degree morning in the desert, it was wonderful spending time above 9000 ft with temps in the upper 60s. After another mile walk at the observatory, we drove back to Ruidoso and ate at a local steak place which has a huge salad bar. Now time to get the kids in bed and drool at the mountain some more before replacing all our gear and getting up at the crack of dawn for the long trek back. So sad to be leaving but fear my work email inbox if we stay much longer. Ha! Plus we are missing Snickers! (and my running buddies- seriously need to get exercising again to burn off all this vacation food!)
